Today, on what would have been her birthday, we begin sharing a tribute to the life and legacy of Vanya Mangaliso, founder of Sun Goddess South Africa.
This series is not simply a remembrance. It is a documentation.
Through photographs collected across decades, we revisit the journey of the woman behind the brand — from childhood dreams to the creation of a fashion house that would go on to shape South African fashion.
Each image is a chapter.
Each moment a thread in a larger story.
The girl.
The dreamer.
The becoming.
Before the runways and the recognition, there was a young woman with vision, imagination, and the courage to create something of her own.
Today, on her birthday, we begin at the beginning.

For more than two decades, Thando Mangaliso and his late wife, Vanya Mangaliso, built Sun Goddess into one of South Africa’s most recognisable fashion houses.
Known for its bold silhouettes, vibrant prints and unapologetic celebration of African identity, the label helped shape how African luxury fashion is perceived both locally and globally.
Now, Thando is ushering the brand into a new chapter.
As Sun Goddess prepares for a significant rebrand, the designer says the move is not about abandoning the past but about repositioning the brand for a changing fashion landscape and a new generation of consumers.
He told Drum that the decision to rebrand followed years of reflection on how the brand can remain relevant in a rapidly evolving industry.
A proud moment for the entire family as we celebrate his graduation from Wits and his achievement as a qualified accountant.
This milestone is not only a reflection of his discipline, dedication, and quiet strength, but also a continuation of a powerful legacy.
His father and mother, Thando and the late Vanya Mangaliso, poured so much love, vision, and purpose into everything they did, and today, we see that same light living on through him. Her spirit, her values, her grace… carried forward in the man he has become.
We are incredibly proud of you, Kwindla.
This is only the beginning.

The silhouettes crafted for this collection are an artistic fusion of structured drama and effortless elegance. Billowing skirts and sheer textures flow gracefully, while sculpted bustiers and bold ruffles command attention. Each piece is a story woven into lavish fabrics of exciting textures and prints, all playing with the light to bring the beauty of movement to life. The intricate trims and hand-crafting, like the signature beadwork, honour our traditional heritage, elevating it to a modern South African-tropical aesthetic.
Accessories, the crown jewels of the Sun Goddess signature, further elevate the collection. Oversized sunhats, beaded body chains, and ornate pieces evoke a sense of regality, grounding each ensemble with intention and purpose. Hand-wrapped headpieces and bold belts complete the looks, intertwining luxury with cultural significance.

On 30 August 2025, Johannesburg witnessed an unforgettable Women’s Month celebration as She’s A Wonder, founded by the dynamic Sophie Ndaba, brought together hundreds of women, entrepreneurs, and cultural leaders for a night of empowerment and transformation.
As one of the evening’s closing highlights, Sun Goddess presented The Power of Herstory, an activation that combined fashion, storytelling, and tribute.
Five carefully curated looks told a story of resilience and empowerment: two mannequins revealed heritage-inspired designs, two models embodied the strength and grace of the modern African woman, and Sophie Ndaba herself brought the showcase to its climax in a finale look that symbolised legacy and light.
Through this presentation, Sun Goddess reaffirmed its 25-year commitment to elevating women through heritage, presence, and identity. It was more than fashion; it was a declaration that every woman’s story matters, and every woman has the power to shine.
We celebrate Sophie Ndaba for creating this powerful platform, and we are proud to have shared in this moment of unity, remembrance, and inspiration.
